Spreader boots are for sail protection against chafe otherwise eventually the sails breaks. One way that many sailmakers do, is to reinforce the sails with an extra layer of sail cloth material or you can also make the spreader tips smooth. To reduce the damage to the sails, you need spreader boots protection to cover the end of the sails with spreader boots in leather or with tape. There are various solutions to protect the spreaders.
Tape
The most common is for sail protection is with with electrical tape or Gaffa tape / silver tape / cloth material tape. It usually breaks down by the UV light in a couple of months. It looks pretty ugly with tape residue hanging from the spreaders. When you take down the spreaders you have sticky tape residue on the spreaders and old residue are hard to get off. There are more different tapes such as the million-dollar tape. UV protected and lasts all season but as the name implies, it is quite expensive.
Plastic
Customized plastic covers. Here you have to know exactly what spreader tips you have and trademark on the mast to find the right plastic cover. Cheap but har to get it right.
Leather
There are two different spreader boots in leather for sail protection. Sew on and Waterline Design Spreader boots.
– Leather that is sew on to the spreader. Classic solution that is customized for your spreaders. You cut a piece of leather and pre-punch it and sew them on to the spreader ends. It is quite expensive (take long time) but looks nice and works well. Hard work when you should inspect the spreader.
– Spreader boots in leather set up with Velcro from Waterline Design. A universal solution that fits all types of spreaders. Four sizes fit everything in the market. You only need to measure the width of the spreaders to be able to choose the right one. The spreader boot is a cover that has leather on the outside and neoprene on the inside. The spreader cover is folded around the spreader and fastened with a Velcro strap which is rolled around the spreader. On the edge of the leather / neoprene cover is a rubber cord that pulls together the edges. The edge band makes the size of the spreader cover flexible. The neoprene inside makes the leather smoother. According to riggers / sailmakers this is really nice that every spreader should have. Everything is UV protected and we have also sewn on a layer of leather on the Velcro strap to make it a little nicer.
Marc Bucklen –
Boots are well designed but the sizing represented in the charts are not great. I ordered the large boot non-contiguous for and it barely covers the spreader tip. Love the design but they need to do some more work on the sizing table.

Jim R. –
Love these spreader boots. in the past i’ve made my own with bits of carpet covered with leather and a meter or 2 of tape. they worked but i never took them off to inspect the rig. Now i have no excuse for not regularly looking under the boots.

Easy to order, arrived spectacularly fast, reasonable price. Why do things arrive faster from Sweden than when I order something from Texas. Amazing

Have not installed these yet, but other sailors think they are the way to go, and I’m sure I will too. Ordering was easy, and shipping prompt. Perfect that they come two to a package.
